Abstract

Study Summary: This study aims to analyze the image of the family in Turkish drama, as this topic is central to understanding the socio-cultural dimensions of these dubbed foreign productions. The study stemmed from the following main question: What are the meanings and values conveyed through the image of the family in Turkish drama? To analyze this topic, the study relied on the semiological analysis method according to Roland Barthes’ approach, which is based on the denotative and connotative levels, in order to uncover the underlying meanings and symbols related to the image of the family. The sample included six scenes from episodes of the third season of the series The Pit. The study reached the following findings: The concept of family and neighborhood emerges as a supreme value, where belonging to the family, preserving its reputation, and protecting it are considered sacred duties for each member. The series also presents a realistic portrayal of fatherhood, showing that fathers are not always ideal -fatherhood does not imply perfection, and family relationships may be marked by difficulties and mistreatment. The drama illustrates how the mother’s role is centered on being a symbol of strength, wisdom, and protection of the family, constantly striving to maintain unity and cohesion among her children.
